This natural hot spring is located at 2,410 meters above sea level, the highest point in Japan, with a spectacular view of Tateyama. It is located in the center of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
Tateyama’s Jigokudani (Hell Valley) has long been considered one of the three most sacred places in Japan, where people of the Tateyama faith worshipped the hydrogen sulfide fumaroles.
Mikurigaike Onsen is located directly above the Jigokudani. The source of the hot spring is drawn from Jigokudani, and the water is 100% free-flowing with no added water or heat. The spring is a simple sulfur spring, and the temperature of the source is 54°C.
There is one indoor bath each for men and women with a view. There are no open-air baths, only indoor baths. The 100% free-flowing hot spring water, which is cloudy white and smells of sulfur, will warm and heal your tired body.
One-day bathing is available, and lodging is also available, making it “Japan’s highest hot spring resort.
It combines elements of a mountain lodge and a ryokan. Various types of rooms are available, including private rooms and shared rooms, but reservations are recommended as the number of guests is limited.
It is often used by people who stay overnight during sightseeing along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route or as a base for mountain climbing. Guests can bathe for free as many times as they wish during the day, even after check-out.
A crater lake, Mikuri-ike, stretches about 12 minutes’ walk from the Murodo Terminal through the high pine trees on the Murodo Plateau, and a hot spring resort is built on the lake.
The view of the crisp morning and evening air of the plateau and the divine peaks of Tateyama is wonderful.
