Jade Beach (Miyazaki Sakai Coast)

Treasure hunting on a pebble beach!

This is a gravel beach where jade stones, a rarity in the world, are washed up on the shore.
It stretches 100 m wide and 4 km east to west, facing the Sea of Japan.

Jade has been prized as a type of jewel since ancient times.
It is called “Jade Beach” because the rough stones are washed up on the beach.

This area was a production site for jade beads from the Jomon to Kofun periods.

People are constantly seen on the beach looking for the raw jade stones.

Jade rocks washed up on the coast of Japan

Jade stones can be picked up on the coast of Japan only in a very limited area along the coastal corridor that connects this jade beach with Itoigawa City to the east.

This beautiful emerald green natural beach boasts the best water quality in the prefecture and has been selected as one of the 100 best bathing beaches and one of the 100 best beaches in Japan.
