Located at the entrance to the beautiful Kurobe Gorge in the Northern Alps, Unazuki Onsen is the largest hot spring resort in Toyama Prefecture.
The hot spring resort has a long history, having opened in 1923 against the backdrop of power development along the Kurobe River. Many inns and recreation facilities line the Kurobe River valley, and it is also the base for trolley sightseeing along the Kurobe Gorge Railway.
It has a history of being a place where visitors can be healed by nature, with its pure hot spring water and a variety of delicacies from the mountains to the sea, and has been loved by many writers and ink masters.
Here, the Kuronagi Hot Spring, which boasts the richest hot water supply in the prefecture, is used as the source of the hot spring water, which is drawn over a distance of 7 km using a hot-water pipe.
One of the attractions to be enjoyed here is not only the spectacular natural beauty, but also the wonderful taste. Visitors can enjoy a variety of foods such as river fish, wild vegetables, and fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan.
The area also serves as a base for exploring the Kurobe Gorge via trolley car and other means, and is a great place for skiing and other activities.
Unazuki Onsenkyo is characterized by the clear water drawn from Kuroyanagi Onsen. Its transparency is said to be the highest in Japan, and the beautiful hot water is reminiscent of the clear waters of the Kurobe River.
The pH value is slightly alkaline, and it is a simple hot spring that is gentle to the skin. Unazuki Onsen uses a hot-spring drawing method using a hot-spring drawing pipe that stretches 7 km, which is rare in Japan. Historically, this hot spring resort developed along with the Kurobe Gorge expedition and the power supply development of the Kurobe River, and many hotels, inns, stores, and souvenir stores line the entrance to the Kurobe Gorge.
It is the largest hot spring resort in Toyama Prefecture, and there is a fountain using hot spring water in front of Unazuki Onsen Station.
Southeast of Unazuki Onsen Station is Unazuki Station on the Kurobe Gorge Railway, which is used by many tourists visiting the Kurobe Gorge.
In the opposite direction is Unazuki Park, where there are poems composed by Emperor Showa when he once visited, as well as monuments to poets such as Tekkan Yosano, Akiko Yosano, and Hiiragi Miya (Miyashiji).
In the hot spring resort area, there are footbaths “Omokage” and “Ippuku”. In addition, there is the Kurobe City Unazuki International Hall “Serene”, the Kurobe River Electricity Memorial Museum, and the Unazuki Shrine.
If you continue along the right bank road, you can visit the Unazuki Dam and the Daimukonkan Museum, and you can also cross the bridge to view Unazuki Lake and use the experience exchange facility called “Tochino-yu” (hot spring).
The name “Unazuki” was given in modern times and was taken from the name of a valley near Momohara. According to legend, people who visited the area “nodded their heads” to the sound of the water and wind, and felt purified in mind and body.
It is also said that the character for “Unazuki” came from the thought of “a place with a beautiful moon comparable to Uji and Nara.
